The essence of becoming a Vidmaster lies in achieving a harmonious balance amidst the chaos of destruction. It is the ability to navigate unscathed through an onslaught of grenades and slow-motion bullets.

When every fiber of your being adapts to facilitate a direct connection from your eyes to your fingers—a connection that instinctively triggers the firing of a rocket long before you comprehend the faint yellow blip on your motion detector—it is then that you embody a Vidmaster.

The term "vid" was introduced within the realm of Marathon during the development of the initial game. Its purpose was to distinguish exceptional players, particularly in multiplayer matches, from the mere canon fodder.

The Oath of the Vidmaster was inscribed into the skip-levels dialog (Command-Option-Begin New Game) as a constant reminder for players to strive for the highest level of excellence:

"I pledge to punch all switches, to never shoot where I could use grenades, to admit the existence of no level except Total Carnage, to never use Caps Lock as my 'run' key, and to never, ever, leave a single Bob alive."

To uphold these principles is to willingly embrace extreme danger. It demands playing the game with unwavering intensity and unparalleled skill; this is the essence of being a Vidmaster.

The Marathon® saga—comprising these three games—serves as an exceptional training and testing ground for aspiring Vidmasters. Engage in single-player battles against extraterrestrial foes or form a networked group across over 80 levels. However, the true test lies in surviving one of the 50 included netgame arenas against fellow players. It is through such intense trials that true Vidmasters emerge.
